- Choose a hackberry tree Wheaton for large areas that need shade and wind buffering. These trees are ideal for spacious properties that need structural coverage.
- Select a serviceberry tree where space is tighter and seasonal change is desired. This tree provides blooms, berries, and bright fall foliage in a smaller footprint.
- Plant hackberry along property lines, in community green spaces, or as windbreaks for open lots.
- Place a serviceberry tree Wheaton closer to patios, sidewalks, or entryways where ornamental detail matters.
- Give each tree at least 15–20 feet of spacing to accommodate mature root systems and canopy spread without crowding.
- Use mulch around the base of both species to retain soil moisture, reduce temperature swings, and suppress weed growth.
- Prune Serviceberry in early spring to shape it and encourage strong branch formation; leave Hackberry mostly unpruned unless for clearance or health maintenance.
Watch for berry drop from both trees. If fruit cleanup is a concern, plant away from driveways or heavily trafficked paths.
