What Are Piles and Why Do They Happen?

Piles, also known as hemorrhoids or bawaseer in Urdu, are a very common health issue in Karachi due to our diet, weather, and lifestyle. Piles are swollen veins in the lower rectum or anus that can cause pain, itching, and bleeding, especially during bowel movements.

There are two main types:

  • Internal piles: Found inside the rectum and usually painless but may bleed.

  • External piles: Found under the skin around the anus and can be very painful.

Why do piles happen?

  • Low-fiber diet (very common in Karachi’s food culture)

  • Constipation and straining during stools

  • Sitting for long hours (office workers, drivers)

  • Pregnancy (due to pressure on veins)

  • Obesity or being overweight

Who is at risk? People of all ages can develop piles, but adults over 30 in Karachi who follow a sedentary lifestyle and eat fast food regularly are more at risk.

If you experience rectal bleeding, pain during sitting, or feel lumps near the anus, it's best to consult a doctor in Karachi who specializes in treating piles.
